hours 5/5-5/12

6 hours~this week I spent many(10 hours atleast) many hours researching my objects and related objects in the library, the museum, and on the internet. i couldn't get access to all the books i wanted to because they were all loaned out and i could not manage to track them down in time so i went to to other libraries with no success because i was looking for very specific info having to do with my objects spcifically. I spent sometime(3 hours) reading other blogs and talking to fellow classmates at school about our projects and what problems we ran into along the way.

5-5 hours

5/5 hours~(6) i have spent a few hours(3) over the last few days looking through books for my objects. i have read blogs including the class blog page(1 hour). i have also spent some time(2 hours) searching the internet for info on my objects, looking for museum jobs, and prepping for the quiz which was not as easy as the first.

hours 4/28

4/28 hours-this week was pretty tough for me. A couple people i knew past away so i have been a bit distracted but i did manage to spenda couple hours(3) reading blogs and i went to the library to find the american indian art periodicals.

Repatriation

1. "Notice of intent to repatriate cultural items: Louisiana State Universtiy Museum of Natural Sciences, Baton Rouge LA (January 6, 2004). This Notice pertained to 12,510 glass beads of European Manufacture collected in 1937 from the Alston Place archaeological site in Mississippi and donated to the museum"(AIA v.30 summer 2005 p. 100) The beads that were found have been classified as "unassociated funerary objects" and were part of a Chickasaw and a Natchez village. "The beads were scheduled to be turned over to the Chickasaw nation of Oklahoma and the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana"(AIAv30(6):100, Summer 2005).
2. "Notice of intent to repatriate Cultural items: San Diego Museum of Man, San Diego, Ca  and California Department of Parks and Recreation, Sacramento, Ca (January 29, 2004)."(AIAv30(6):100,summer2005) 168 sherds and a stone flake which date from A.D.500 - 1800 are scheduled to be repatriated under the NAGPRA definition of "unassociated funerary objects".In the 1930's the Museum of Man conducted many digs and these objects are a result of that period. These funerary artifacts were scheduled to be repatriated from the museum of man and given to the Kumeyaay Cultural Repatriation Commitee who is recieving them on behalf of more than ten groups and bands. (American Indian Art v30(6):100, summer 2005)
3. "Notice of intent to Repatriate Cultural Items: U.S. Department of Defense,  Department of the Army, U.S. Army Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca, Fort Huachuca, AZ (March 25, 2004)" (AIAv30(6):100,Summer 2005). In 1964 a University of Arizona graduate student was granted permission to excavate a cremation burial site on base and the objects in question were stored in the base museum. The objects being repatriated to the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona are "one group of shell ornaments, two ceramic vessels, one ceramic dice cup, one ceramic figurine, two stone effigies, and one stone rasp"(AIAv30(6):100,Summer2005).

reading

I spent a few hours reading peoples blogs and the class blogger page. I have also posted  the L Dawson photo i finally recieved form the pheobe hearst museum. they were going to send whatever they could find so I guess this is it, no biography.

hours for 4-7/4-14- i have been getting over poison oak this last week and did not do alot in the way of museum work. i am better and am ready to do great museum things this week. i finally recieved an email from the pheobe hearst museum on Lawrence Dawson which is a little to late for our needs and typical.

Associate Director, Security



The Hammer Museum seeks an experienced Associate Director of Security to oversee the security of the Museum and the safety of visitors and staff. Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the successful candidate will manage a 30+ person department comprised of a variety of positions. The incumbent will be responsible for the following key areas:



Coordinating with related Museum departments to ensure the security of Museum assets by providing trained personnel to guard permanent collections and exhibitions and for staffing special events and public programs

Job Requirements

I would like to begin by stating that there were many jobsIi would have liked to work on those job boards. the reason why I chose this job was that safety is one of the things that seems to come naturally to me. I have some experience in security and management which make me thick that I would be a good candidiate for this position not to mention I am very interested in museums.
1- 5+ years of management experience
2-excellent customer service skills (3+ years in hospitality industry)
3- experince in coordinating large events (cemetery and retreat)
4-archaeological repository volunteer hours (museum related)
5-excellent verbal and written skills (I can speak and write clearly)

poison oak

i have had poison oak the past four days from hiking in the mountains. it is going away now, i think.i have missed a bit of my classes this week but i am pretty sure i will be able to make it tomorow.

hours 3-15-10

1.5 hours- i spent a while online this last monday trying to find some info on Lawrence E dawson. with no luck i decided to start contacting people at the pheobe a hearst museum where he worked for many years. knowone got back to me as of 3-17-10 :(

tuesday hours 3-16-10

2 hours-on tuesday i went back to the state library with an exact date for finding a picture in microfilm. parking was ridiculous, it must have been a busy day at the capitol because there was no parking to be found. after circling the block 400 times i was able to secure a spot and went in and found that picture but no new info. after i went to sac state and met shawna and dr. C in the museum to go over more exhibit setup.

2 hours.-on monday i went downtown to the state library(2-4pm) to find info/picture on a certain L E Dawson. i looked through publications with pictures, all availabe 1970's UC Berkeley year books, and micorfilm. i did not have an exact date with me at the time so the microfilm was not going to yield any positive results. i didn't realize this until i started looking through it, but microfilm is very hard on the eyes!!

friday 3-12-10 hours

2.5 hours-last friday(3-12) i met with Dr. castaneda(1:45pm) to go over what was expected for the exhibit and hours for blogging. after i met with Dr. C, i met shawna and and Dr. C in the museum and we went over the exhibit and what we needed to change and/or do still.

scheduling

today i met with shawna to discuss when we are going to get together for the fabrication of the exhibit. shawna will contact amanda to meet with us tomorrow.

prepairing the exhibit

yesterday 3-10-10, i got together with my group  at 12pm for 1 hour to discuss our part of the exhibit setup. we went over and agreed on how we wanted our part of the exhibit to look before we presented it to the class.

3-10 hours

i have spent (4)four hours total this last weekend and yesterday researching info for my groups part of the exhibit process. i looked high and low for a pic of Larry Dawson but didn't find one anywhere. I thought I had it many times over and when i would search i would find a cite which would say something like "larry dawson-image..." but it was an image of an artifact or no image at all. i must have looked in a hundred books that had his name listed in them but no picture. i also spent some of the time reading and commenting on bloggs and planning our design and meeting times for group 3. we meet this morning to finalize the story board.

friday hours!

2 hours~this last friday 3-5 i met with the other members of my team and Dr. Castaneda to discuss what we are planning on doing with our part of the exhibit process. we began thinking about the story board we are going to present this week. after i met with my group i thought about what we could do for our part of the exhibit. coffin case or no case? what is important to display and what is not?

getting to the deed of gift project

I spent over an hour just getting to the beginnng of my deed of gift project. I was the odd man out for this project at the beginning and so I was paired up with Dr C. I met her in her office on friday upon her request. we moved our project time to the museum on monday at 1:15pm. on Monday Dr. C decided that I would be partnered up with Brian instead of her. Apparently Brian didn't have apartner either. so Brian and i got together on tuesday at 1:45pm to complete the project.

between yesterday3-1 and today3-2 i have spent 4 hours on the following- navigating through blogger(still learning), reading blogs( most of my time spent here and am not quite finished), postcard assignment post(shamans basket), transfered photos of artifacts to all computers, made many comments and answered some, put artifact pics on bloggers page and did some upgrades to my page.  

figuring things out

I spent two and a half (2.5) hours today in 4003 and the museum setting up apointments and learning how to navigate through blogger. i met up with Dr. Castaneda to look at my artifacts and discuss the assignments coming up. i was also able to take a few photos of my artifacts myself.

american museum of natural history

i spent a couple hours or so checking out the silk road section. the silk road pages tell about the cities on the route and what was traded and during whiat periods in history. From Baghdad to xi'an, this exhibit tells about the cities themselves. One interesting fact I found amusing was that the city of Baghdad was known as the city of peace. considering what is happening over in that vicinity today, it is quite a contradiction. Samarkand was well known for it's fine paper and shrewd traders who traded from distant countries. before this i had never herd of Samarkand.

repositiory

last friday, 2-12-10, i spent an hour talking with christi getting introduced to the repository and finding out what my first assignment is. i am going to start off by taking some photos of artifacts in the zallio collection if i am not mistaken.

quiz 1

I took the quiz, yay for me! There is a box at the end that says "submission in progress, this quiz is being submitted". It hasn't gone away and I hope my test was sent off properly.

museum day 2010

I was only able to visit 2 of the twenty museums I wanted to on museum day but its better than nothing. the state indian museum was an easy stop for me on the way over to old sac so I stopped in. it was so busy it was hard to enjoy the museum. once I got to old sac I found it was even more busy there. there was a ten minute line for the train museum when I got over there but I decided to brave it since I went all the way over to old sac for that very reason. it was also jam packed but worth saving ten dollars or so. http://www.sacmuseums.org/museumday.html

hopefully my page is a little easier to read now. i have taken the adult warning off as far as i can tell.

cotton collection

my three cotton collection objects are 6 BAS0032 74-32-2-23, 43 74-32-7, and 33 BAS0202 74-32-2-3. one of the collection pieces did not have a BAS on it. I was unable to view my objects last week due to illness. i will clean the museum for my punishment!
